Dramatic Lighting

Since I am mostly an on location photographer, this time of year tends to be a bit slow. I decided to enroll in an online workshop to learn a few more tips about how to shoot in all different kinds of light. Our first assignment was to take some shots with dramatic lighting. This isn’t my normal style, but it was fun to play and experiment.

Here are a couple of my favorites.

These are really great!!! I’m not naturally drawn to want to shoot dramatic lighting either. I just bought an umbrella and lightstand and have shot practice shots with it twice. I love soft lighting as long as it looks natural. When you took your classes on studio lighting, did you shoot with softboxes or umbrellas, or both? The photo I took here of my daughter is nice and soft, but it just doesn’t look flattering enough. I think it may be too soft. Maybe too bright too, or I just need to direct the lighting better. I’ve got so much to learn with lighting. These shots above are really terrific!!!

Hi Kerry,
What online lighting workshop was this? I’m always looking for some kind of workshop to do during the down time months. Great photos :) Thanks!
